Unami Foundation is a South African nonprofit organisation working to strengthen communities and institutions through practical operating partnerships, digital infrastructure, skills development and sustainable social and economic initiatives.
About Us | Unami Foundation
Self-determination. Local capability. Sustainable development.
We believe communities are better positioned to shape their futures when people have meaningful choices, the capability to participate, and practical ways to organise their knowledge, activities, relationships and resources.
Our work brings communities, traditional authorities, schools, sports structures, businesses and public institutions into opportunities for collaboration. We develop context-specific programmes and tools that support local coordination, institutional capacity, participation and pathways towards greater self-reliance.
Our focus is not simply on delivering individual projects. It is on helping establish the capabilities, relationships and operating foundations through which communities and institutions can continue to work, develop and create value.
Who We Are
Unami Foundation connects community development with practical implementation.
We work across community operating partnerships, digital and communication infrastructure, governance coordination, education, youth development, skills opportunities and social enterprise. Each initiative responds to a particular community or institutional context while contributing to the Foundation’s wider purpose.
Our work includes Technology for Good, which brings together digital platforms and operating models for schools, community sports and traditional governance. Alongside this, our wider initiatives explore technical training, local enterprise and opportunities for participation in economic development.
We recognise that communities are not simply recipients of services. They contain knowledge, relationships, leadership, skills and resources that can form the basis of their own development.
Unami works to support those existing strengths with practical tools, operating partnerships and opportunities for collaboration.
Our Mission
To strengthen community self-determination and local capability through operating partnerships, appropriate technology, skills development and sustainable social and economic initiatives.
We aim to help communities and institutions organise their activities, coordinate stakeholders, preserve relevant information, participate in development opportunities and establish more sustainable ways of operating.
Our approach connects immediate practical needs with longer-term capability: supporting what communities are doing today while creating pathways for continued development, collaboration and enterprise.
